Winter of the World is the second book in The Century Trilogy by Ken Follett. The audiobook is narrated by John Lee and spans the years 1933 to 1949, covering the events leading up to and during World War II. The book follows the lives of five families from different parts of the world and how their lives are affected by the war.

The book starts with the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany. The first family we meet is the von Ulrichs, a wealthy German family who are initially supportive of Hitler’s policies. However, as the Nazis become more extreme, they begin to question their loyalty to the party. The second family we meet is the Williams family from the United States. They are a middle-class family who are involved in politics and are opposed to the rise of fascism in Europe.

The third family we meet is the Fitzherberts from England. They are an aristocratic family who are initially dismissive of the threat posed by Hitler. However, as the war approaches, they become more involved in the war effort. The fourth family we meet is the Peshkovs from the Soviet Union. They are a working-class family who are caught up in the political turmoil of Stalin’s regime. The final family we meet is the Dewars from Wales. They are a mining family who are also caught up in the political turmoil of the time.

As the book progresses, we see how the lives of these families become intertwined with the events of the war. The von Ulrichs become disillusioned with the Nazi party and are eventually forced to flee Germany. The Williams family becomes involved in the war effort and their son, Woody, becomes a fighter pilot. The Fitzherberts become involved in the intelligence services and their daughter, Daisy, becomes a spy. The Peshkovs become involved in the Soviet war effort and their son, Lev, becomes a tank commander. The Dewars become involved in the labor movement and their son, Billy, becomes a union organizer.

One of the strengths of the audiobook is the way in which John Lee brings the characters to life. He gives each character a distinct voice and accent, which helps to differentiate them from each other. He also does an excellent job of conveying the emotions of the characters, particularly during the more dramatic moments of the book.

Another strength of the audiobook is the way in which Ken Follett weaves together the different storylines. Although the book covers a wide range of events and characters, the narrative never feels disjointed. Instead, the different storylines are woven together in a way that feels natural and organic.

One of the themes of the book is the way in which ordinary people are caught up in the events of history. The characters in the book are not politicians or generals, but ordinary people who are trying to survive in a world that is rapidly changing. They are forced to make difficult choices and face difficult challenges, often with little support or guidance.

Another theme of the book is the way in which the war affects different parts of the world in different ways. The book covers events in Germany, the United States, England, the Soviet Union, and Wales, and shows how the war affected each of these places differently. For example, in Germany, the war led to the rise of the Nazi party and the persecution of Jews and other minorities. In the United States, the war led to a sense of national unity and a renewed commitment to democracy. In the Soviet Union, the war led to the defeat of the Nazis but also to the rise of Stalin’s regime.

Overall, Winter of the World is an excellent audiobook that provides a compelling and engaging account of the events leading up to and during World War II. The characters are well-developed and the narrative is expertly woven together. John Lee’s narration is excellent and helps to bring the characters to life. If you are a fan of historical fiction or are interested in World War II, then this audiobook is definitely worth checking out.
