The Time of Contempt is the fourth book in the Witcher series by Andrzej Sapkowski. It is a continuation of the story of Geralt of Rivia, a witcher who is on a quest to find his adopted daughter, Ciri. The book was originally published in Polish in 1995, and the English translation was released in 2013. The audiobook version of The Time of Contempt is narrated by Peter Kenny and is approximately 11 hours and 55 minutes long.

The story of The Time of Contempt picks up where the previous book, Baptism of Fire, left off. Geralt and his companions, including the bard Dandelion and the sorceress Yennefer, are on their way to meet with the emperor of Nilfgaard, Emhyr var Emreis. They hope to negotiate a deal that will allow them to find Ciri, who is being pursued by the Wild Hunt, a group of spectral riders who are determined to capture her.

The first part of the book focuses on the political machinations of the various factions in the world of the Witcher. The Northern Kingdoms are at war with Nilfgaard, and tensions are high between the sorcerers and the non-magical population. The sorcerers are divided into two factions, the Lodge of Sorceresses and the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, and they are both vying for power and influence.

The audiobook does an excellent job of conveying the complex political landscape of the Witcher world. Peter Kenny’s narration is clear and engaging, and he does an excellent job of distinguishing between the various characters and their different accents and dialects. The political intrigue is a major part of the story, and the audiobook makes it easy to follow along and keep track of the various factions and their motivations.

As the story progresses, Geralt and his companions become embroiled in the political conflict. They are caught between the Lodge and the Brotherhood, and they must navigate a dangerous path to avoid being caught in the crossfire. Meanwhile, Ciri is on the run from the Wild Hunt, and she must use all of her skills and wits to evade capture.

The audiobook does an excellent job of conveying the tension and danger of Ciri’s situation. Peter Kenny’s narration is particularly effective in conveying the fear and desperation of Ciri as she tries to stay one step ahead of her pursuers. The Wild Hunt is a terrifying presence in the story, and the audiobook does an excellent job of conveying their otherworldly nature and their relentless pursuit of Ciri.

The Time of Contempt is a dark and complex story, and the audiobook does an excellent job of conveying the emotional depth of the characters. Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri are all complex and flawed characters, and their struggles and conflicts are portrayed with nuance and sensitivity. The audiobook does an excellent job of conveying the emotional weight of their experiences, and it is easy to become invested in their stories and their fates.

One of the strengths of the audiobook is its pacing. The story moves at a brisk pace, and there is always something happening to keep the listener engaged. The political intrigue, the action scenes, and the emotional moments are all well-balanced, and the audiobook never feels slow or dull.

The production values of the audiobook are also excellent. The sound quality is clear and crisp, and the music and sound effects are used sparingly but effectively. The audiobook is a high-quality production that is a pleasure to listen to.

Overall, The Time of Contempt audiobook is an excellent adaptation of a complex and engaging story. Peter Kenny’s narration is top-notch, and he does an excellent job of conveying the emotional depth and complexity of the characters. The audiobook is well-paced and engaging, and it is a great way to experience the story of Geralt of Rivia and his companions.
