The King’s Buccaneer is the second book in the Krondor’s Sons series by Raymond E. Feist. The audiobook is narrated by Peter Joyce and is approximately 23 hours and 23 minutes long. The story is set in the fictional world of Midkemia and follows the adventures of Nicholas, the illegitimate son of Prince Arutha, as he becomes a pirate and sets out to rescue his kidnapped love interest.

The story begins with Nicholas, who is now a young man, returning to Krondor after spending several years at sea. He is eager to see his family and friends, but his joy is short-lived when he learns that his love interest, Lady Megan, has been kidnapped by the evil sorcerer, Leso Varen. Nicholas is devastated and vows to rescue her, even if it means becoming a pirate.

Nicholas sets out to find a ship and crew to help him in his quest. He meets a group of pirates led by Captain Berek, who agrees to help him in exchange for a share of the treasure that they hope to find. Nicholas and the pirates set sail and begin their journey to Leso Varen’s stronghold.

Along the way, Nicholas and his crew face many challenges, including battles with other pirates and storms at sea. They also encounter a group of islanders who are being terrorized by a sea monster. Nicholas and his crew help the islanders defeat the monster and in return, they are given valuable information about Leso Varen’s stronghold.

When Nicholas and his crew finally reach Leso Varen’s stronghold, they face a fierce battle with the sorcerer’s minions. Nicholas is able to rescue Lady Megan, but Leso Varen escapes. Nicholas and his crew return to Krondor, where they are hailed as heroes.

The King’s Buccaneer is a thrilling adventure story that is full of action, suspense, and romance. Feist’s world-building is excellent, and the characters are well-developed and engaging. Peter Joyce’s narration is also excellent, and he brings the story to life with his expressive voice and excellent pacing.

One of the strengths of the audiobook is the way that Feist weaves together multiple storylines. In addition to Nicholas’ quest to rescue Lady Megan, there are also subplots involving Prince Arutha’s efforts to protect the kingdom from invasion and the machinations of Leso Varen and his allies. Feist does an excellent job of balancing these different storylines, and they all come together in a satisfying conclusion.

Another strength of the audiobook is the character development. Nicholas is a complex and sympathetic protagonist, and his journey from a naive young man to a seasoned pirate is well-done. Lady Megan is also a well-developed character, and her relationship with Nicholas is believable and engaging. The supporting characters, including Captain Berek and Prince Arutha, are also well-developed and add depth to the story.

The action scenes in the audiobook are also well-done. Feist has a talent for writing exciting battle scenes, and the audiobook is full of them. The battles are well-paced and easy to follow, and they are enhanced by Peter Joyce’s excellent narration.

One potential weakness of the audiobook is the length. At over 23 hours, it is a long listen, and some listeners may find it difficult to stay engaged for the entire duration. However, the story is well-paced, and the action and suspense keep the listener engaged throughout.

Overall, The King’s Buccaneer is an excellent audiobook that is sure to please fans of epic fantasy and adventure stories. Feist’s world-building, character development, and action scenes are all top-notch, and Peter Joyce’s narration is excellent. Highly recommended.
