The Broken Kingdoms is the second book in the Inheritance Trilogy by N.K. Jemisin. It is a fantasy novel that follows the story of a blind artist named Oree Shoth, who lives in the city of Sky, which is ruled by the gods. The audiobook is narrated by Casaundra Freeman, who does an excellent job of bringing the characters and the world to life.

The story takes place ten years after the events of the first book, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. The gods have been overthrown, and the world is in chaos. Oree Shoth is a blind artist who lives in the city of Sky. She has the ability to see magic, which makes her an outcast in a world where magic is forbidden. Oree is also a Gatherer, which means she collects artifacts that have magical properties.

One day, Oree discovers a man who has been brutally murdered in an alleyway. She takes him back to her home and discovers that he is a god. His name is Shiny, and he is the son of the god of the underworld. Shiny is also the father of Oree’s child, which she had with him ten years ago. Oree had no idea that Shiny was a god, and she is shocked to discover this.

As Oree tries to figure out who killed Shiny, she becomes embroiled in a conspiracy that involves the gods and the city of Sky. She discovers that there are factions within the city that are vying for power, and that they will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Oree also learns that there are other gods who are still alive, and that they are hiding in the city.

The Broken Kingdoms is a complex and intricate story that is full of twists and turns. The world-building is excellent, and the characters are well-developed. Oree is a strong and independent character who is easy to root for. She is also a flawed character, which makes her more relatable. The other characters in the book are also well-written, and they all have their own motivations and agendas.

The audiobook is narrated by Casaundra Freeman, who does an excellent job of bringing the characters and the world to life. She has a clear and expressive voice that is easy to listen to. She also does a great job of differentiating between the different characters, which makes it easy to follow the story.

One of the things that I liked about the audiobook is that it includes a glossary of terms at the end. This is helpful because there are a lot of terms and concepts in the book that may be unfamiliar to readers. The glossary provides definitions for these terms, which makes it easier to understand the story.

Overall, The Broken Kingdoms is an excellent audiobook that is well worth listening to. The story is engaging and well-written, and the characters are well-developed. The world-building is excellent, and the narration is top-notch. If you are a fan of fantasy novels, then I highly recommend this audiobook.
