The Bone Ships is the first book in The Tide Child series by British author R.J. Barker. The audiobook is narrated by Jude Owusu and was released in September 2019. The Bone Ships is a high-seas adventure story set in a world where ships are made of dragon bones and the sea is ruled by giant sea monsters.

The story takes place in a world where the sea is the only way to travel and the only way to survive is to be a skilled sailor. The story follows the crew of the Tide Child, a ship made of dragon bones, as they embark on a dangerous mission to find the last of the sea dragons. The sea dragons are believed to be extinct, but the crew of the Tide Child has been tasked with finding them in order to save their world from destruction.

The main character of the story is Joron Twiner, a disgraced captain who has been demoted to a deckhand. Joron is a complex character who is haunted by his past mistakes and struggles to find his place on the ship. He is a reluctant hero who is forced to confront his fears and take on a leadership role when the captain of the Tide Child is killed.

The other main character is Lucky Meas, the captain of the Tide Child. Lucky is a fierce and determined leader who is willing to do whatever it takes to complete her mission. She is a skilled sailor and a fierce fighter who is respected by her crew. Lucky is also a complex character who has a tragic past and is haunted by the loss of her family.

The world-building in The Bone Ships is excellent. The world is richly detailed and the author has created a unique and fascinating world that is both familiar and unfamiliar. The monsters are also a metaphor for the dangers of the sea and the unpredictability of life.

The pacing of the story is excellent. The story is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged. The author does an excellent job of building tension and suspense, and the story is full of surprises.

The characters in The Bone Ships are well-developed and complex. Joron and Lucky are both fascinating characters who are easy to root for. The supporting characters are also well-developed and add depth and complexity to the story.
