Strange Dogs is a novella in The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey. It is set between the events of Babylon’s Ashes and Persepolis Rising, the sixth and seventh books in the series. The audiobook is narrated by Jefferson Mays, who has narrated all of the previous books in the series.

The novella follows the story of a young girl named Cara, who lives on Laconia, a planet that was colonized by the Martian military after the events of Babylon’s Ashes. Laconia is a mysterious planet, with strange flora and fauna that are unlike anything found on other planets in the system. Cara is fascinated by the planet’s strange dogs, which are large, intelligent creatures that seem to have a telepathic connection with each other.

Cara’s father is a scientist who is studying the planet’s unique ecosystem, and he often takes her on expeditions to collect samples and study the strange creatures that live there. On one such expedition, Cara and her father encounter a group of soldiers who are guarding a mysterious structure that has been uncovered on the planet. The soldiers are part of a secret project that is being run by the Martian military, and they are not happy to see civilians snooping around.

Despite the soldiers’ warnings, Cara is determined to explore the structure and find out what secrets it holds. She sneaks away from her father and makes her way to the structure, where she discovers a strange device that seems to be able to control the planet’s strange dogs. Cara is fascinated by the device, and she begins to experiment with it, using it to communicate with the dogs and control their behavior.

As Cara spends more time with the dogs, she begins to realize that they are not just animals, but intelligent beings with their own thoughts and feelings. She forms a bond with one of the dogs, whom she names Xan, and she begins to teach him how to communicate with her using the device. Xan becomes her constant companion, and she spends all of her free time exploring the planet with him.

However, as Cara spends more time with the dogs, she begins to notice that they are behaving strangely. They seem to be becoming more aggressive and territorial, and they are attacking other animals on the planet. Cara is worried about the dogs’ behavior, but she is also afraid to tell anyone about her experiments with the device, for fear of getting in trouble.

As the situation on Laconia becomes more tense, with the Martian military preparing for a possible war with the other factions in the system, Cara realizes that she must take action to stop the dogs from causing more harm. She decides to use the device to try to communicate with the dogs and convince them to stop their aggressive behavior.

The climax of the novella is a tense and emotional scene, as Cara confronts the dogs and tries to reason with them. The scene is expertly narrated by Jefferson Mays, who captures the tension and emotion of the moment perfectly. The resolution of the story is satisfying and poignant, and it leaves the reader with a sense of hope for the future of Laconia and its strange inhabitants.

Overall, Strange Dogs is a fantastic addition to The Expanse series, and the audiobook version is a great way to experience the story. Jefferson Mays’ narration is excellent, and he brings the characters and the world of Laconia to life in a way that is both engaging and immersive. If you are a fan of The Expanse, or if you are looking for a great sci-fi novella to listen to, I highly recommend Strange Dogs.
