Staked is the eighth book in the popular urban fantasy series, The Iron Druid Chronicles, written by Kevin Hearne. The audiobook version of Staked is narrated by Luke Daniels, who has narrated all the previous books in the series. The audiobook has a runtime of 17 hours and 48 minutes and was released on January 26, 2016, by Random House Audio.

The Iron Druid Chronicles follows the adventures of Atticus O’Sullivan, the last surviving druid, who has been alive for over 2,000 years. Atticus has been hiding in plain sight in Tempe, Arizona, running an occult bookshop and trying to avoid the attention of the gods and goddesses who want him dead. However, his peaceful existence is shattered when a group of vampires led by the powerful and ruthless Theophilus attacks him and his friends.

Staked picks up where the previous book, Shattered, left off. Atticus and his allies, including his apprentice Granuaile and his loyal hound Oberon, are recovering from their injuries and trying to figure out how to deal with the aftermath of the vampire attack. They soon discover that Theophilus has allied himself with Loki, the Norse god of mischief, and that they are planning to unleash Ragnarok, the end of the world, by destroying the magical ley lines that hold the earth together.

Atticus and his friends must race against time to stop Theophilus and Loki before it’s too late. Along the way, they encounter a variety of supernatural creatures, including witches, werewolves, and demons, and must navigate complex political alliances and betrayals. Atticus also has to confront his own past and the consequences of his actions, as well as his growing feelings for Granuaile.

The audiobook version of Staked is a thrilling and engaging listen, thanks in large part to Luke Daniels’ excellent narration. Daniels has a talent for bringing the characters to life with distinct voices and personalities, and his pacing and delivery are spot-on. He captures the humor, action, and emotion of the story, making it easy to get lost in the world of The Iron Druid Chronicles.

One of the strengths of Staked, and the series as a whole, is its blend of mythology and modern-day culture. Hearne weaves together elements from various mythologies, including Celtic, Norse, and Greek, and incorporates pop culture references and humor to create a unique and entertaining world. The audiobook version does an excellent job of conveying this blend, with Daniels’ delivery of the witty banter and pop culture references adding to the overall enjoyment of the story.

Another strength of Staked is its character development. Atticus, Granuaile, and Oberon are all well-rounded and complex characters who grow and change over the course of the series. In Staked, Atticus is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and the toll that his long life has taken on him. Granuaile, meanwhile, is struggling with her new role as a druid and her feelings for Atticus. Oberon, as always, provides comic relief and a dog’s-eye view of the world.

The supporting cast of characters is also well-developed, with each character having their own motivations and agendas. The villains, in particular, are memorable and menacing, with Theophilus and Loki making for a formidable team. The audiobook version does an excellent job of conveying the different personalities and motivations of the characters, making it easy to keep track of who’s who and what they’re up to.

The plot of Staked is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. Hearne does an excellent job of balancing the action with character development and world-building, creating a story that is both exciting and emotionally resonant. The audiobook version does an excellent job of conveying the tension and excitement of the story, with Daniels’ delivery of the action scenes and dramatic moments adding to the overall experience.

Overall, Staked is a fantastic addition to The Iron Druid Chronicles and a must-read (or must-listen) for fans of urban fantasy. The audiobook version, narrated by Luke Daniels, is an excellent way to experience the story, with Daniels’ engaging narration bringing the characters and world to life. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the series or a newcomer, Staked is a thrilling and entertaining listen that is sure to leave you wanting more.
