Ship of Magic is the first book in The Liveship Traders trilogy by Robin Hobb. The audiobook is narrated by Anne Flosnik and was published by Tantor Audio in 2010. The book is set in a world where ships are alive and have their own personalities, and follows the lives of the Vestrit family, who own a liveship called Vivacia.

The story begins with the death of Ephron Vestrit, the patriarch of the Vestrit family and the owner of the liveship Vivacia. His daughter, Althea, is devastated by his death and is determined to inherit Vivacia, which she believes is rightfully hers. However, her father’s will states that Vivacia will pass to her brother-in-law, Kyle Haven, who is married to her sister, Keffria.

Althea is outraged by this decision and decides to leave her home in Bingtown to go on a journey to prove herself worthy of inheriting Vivacia. She joins the crew of a ship called the Ophelia, which is captained by a man named Brashen Trell. Althea is determined to prove herself as a capable sailor and earn the respect of the crew.

Meanwhile, Keffria is struggling to deal with the loss of her father and the pressure of running the family business. She is also dealing with the difficult relationship she has with her husband, Kyle, who is abusive and controlling. Keffria’s son, Wintrow, is sent to live with his father on Vivacia, but he is unhappy with the situation and longs to become a priest.

As the story progresses, we learn more about the liveships and the magic that surrounds them. Liveships are made from wizardwood, which is a rare and valuable material that can only be found in the Rain Wilds. When a family owns a liveship, they become part of a network of traders who can communicate with each other through the liveships. The liveships also have the ability to speak to their owners and can even bond with them, becoming almost like a member of the family.

However, owning a liveship is not without its dangers. If a liveship is mistreated or abused, it can become “mad” and turn on its crew. This is what happened to the liveship Paragon, which was once owned by the Vestrit family but is now considered cursed and avoided by all.

As Althea and the crew of the Ophelia sail towards the Rain Wilds, they encounter a group of pirates who are attacking other ships. The pirates are led by a woman named Kennit, who is charismatic and charming but also ruthless and cruel. Kennit takes a liking to Althea and offers her a place on his crew, but she refuses and continues on her journey.

When Althea finally reaches the Rain Wilds, she discovers that the liveships are in danger. The wizardwood trees that they are made from are dying, and without them, the liveships will also die. Althea meets a group of people who are trying to find a way to save the wizardwood trees, and she joins them in their quest.

Meanwhile, Keffria is struggling to deal with her husband’s abusive behavior and turns to her friend, Malta, for support. Malta is a young girl who is obsessed with wealth and status, and she sees Keffria as a way to gain access to the upper echelons of society. However, as Keffria becomes more and more isolated, she begins to realize that Malta is not the friend she thought she was.

As the liveships become more and more important to the traders of Bingtown, tensions begin to rise between the different families. The Vestrits are determined to keep Vivacia under their control, but other families are also vying for power. The liveships become pawns in a dangerous game of politics and intrigue, and it becomes clear that the fate of the liveships will have far-reaching consequences for everyone involved.

The audiobook of Ship of Magic is expertly narrated by Anne Flosnik, who brings the characters and the world of the book to life. Her voice is clear and easy to listen to, and she does an excellent job of differentiating between the different characters. Her portrayal of Kennit, in particular, is chilling and unsettling, capturing the character’s charisma and ruthlessness perfectly.

Ship of Magic is a compelling and engaging audiobook that will appeal to fans of fantasy and adventure. The world-building is rich and detailed, and the characters are complex and well-developed. The liveships are a fascinating concept, and Hobb does an excellent job of exploring their history and mythology. The audiobook is a great way to experience this story, and Flosnik’s narration adds an extra layer of depth and emotion to the already excellent writing.
