The story is set in the year 1968, during the height of the Vietnam War. Court Bannister is a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force and is stationed in Thailand. He is a skilled pilot and has flown numerous missions over North Vietnam. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when he is shot down over Laos and captured by the enemy.
The audiobook begins with Court Bannister being held captive in a prison camp in Laos. He is tortured and interrogated by the enemy, but he refuses to give up any information. He is eventually rescued by a team of American soldiers, but his ordeal has left him physically and emotionally scarred.
