The story of Dark Lover revolves around a group of vampire warriors known as the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is tasked with protecting their race from the Lessening Society, a group of humans who have aligned themselves with the evil Omega. The Brotherhood is led by Wrath, the last purebred vampire in existence. Wrath is a formidable warrior, but he is also blind and has been living a solitary life for centuries.
The story begins with the murder of Darius, a member of the Brotherhood. Darius was also Wrath’s best friend and had been tasked with finding Wrath’s half-human, half-vampire daughter, Beth. Beth is unaware of her true heritage and has been living a normal human life. When Darius is killed, Wrath is forced to step in and protect Beth from the Lessening Society.
As the story progresses, we learn more about the world of the vampires and the Brotherhood. We meet the other members of the Brotherhood, including Rhage, Zsadist, and Butch. Each member of the Brotherhood has their own unique personality and backstory, and we get to know them all throughout the course of the novel.
One of the standout aspects of Dark Lover is the world-building. J.R. Ward has created a rich and complex world that is both fascinating and terrifying. The vampires in this world are not the romanticized creatures we often see in popular culture. They are brutal and violent, and their society is ruled by a strict hierarchy. The Lessening Society is even more terrifying, as they are willing to do whatever it takes to eradicate the vampire race.
The romance between Wrath and Beth is also a major part of the story. While the romance is certainly steamy, it is also complicated by the fact that Wrath is a vampire and Beth is a human/vampire hybrid. There are also other obstacles in their way, including the fact that Wrath is the leader of the Brotherhood and has a duty to protect his race.
Jim Frangione’s narration of the audiobook is excellent. He does a great job of bringing the characters to life and capturing the tone of the story. His voice is deep and gravelly, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the novel.
Overall, Dark Lover is an excellent start to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. The world-building is top-notch, the characters are well-developed, and the romance is steamy and complex. The audiobook version is a great way to experience the story, and Jim Frangione’s narration is top-notch. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance or urban fantasy, Dark Lover is definitely worth checking out.
