Shadow Prey is the second book in the Lucas Davenport series by John Sandford. The audiobook is narrated by Richard Ferrone and runs for approximately 11 hours and 30 minutes. The story is set in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and follows the investigation of a series of murders that seem to be connected to a Native American tribe.

The story begins with the murder of a wealthy businessman, Michael Bekker, who is found dead in his hotel room. Lucas Davenport, a detective with the Minneapolis Police Department, is called in to investigate the case. Bekker’s murder is particularly gruesome, with his eyes and tongue removed, and his body posed in a ritualistic manner.

As Davenport begins to investigate the murder, he discovers that Bekker was involved in a scheme to smuggle Native American artifacts out of the country. This leads him to the Red Lake Reservation, where he meets with tribal leaders and begins to uncover a web of corruption and deceit.

Davenport soon realizes that the murders are not isolated incidents, but part of a larger conspiracy involving the theft and sale of Native American artifacts. He also discovers that Bekker was not the only victim, and that there are other people involved in the scheme who are willing to kill to protect their interests.

As the investigation progresses, Davenport finds himself in a race against time to catch the killer before they strike again. He also has to navigate the complex relationships between the Native American tribes, the FBI, and the local police department, all of whom have their own agendas and interests.

The audiobook is narrated by Richard Ferrone, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. His deep, gravelly voice is perfect for the gritty, noir-style of the book, and he does a great job of capturing the different characters and their personalities.

One of the strengths of the audiobook is the way it captures the atmosphere of Minneapolis and the surrounding area. Sandford does an excellent job of describing the city and its people, and Ferrone’s narration brings it all to life. The audiobook also does a great job of capturing the tension and suspense of the story, keeping the listener engaged and on the edge of their seat throughout.

Another strength of the audiobook is the character of Lucas Davenport. He is a complex and flawed character, with a dark past and a tendency towards violence. Ferrone does an excellent job of capturing Davenport’s personality, bringing out his toughness and his vulnerability in equal measure.

The supporting characters in the audiobook are also well-drawn and interesting. The Native American characters, in particular, are portrayed with sensitivity and respect, and Sandford does an excellent job of exploring the complex relationships between the different tribes and their history with the white settlers.

Overall, Shadow Prey is an excellent audiobook that will appeal to fans of crime fiction and thrillers. The story is well-written and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener guessing. The narration by Richard Ferrone is top-notch, bringing the story and characters to life in a way that is both compelling and entertaining. Highly recommended.
