Ground Zero is a gripping audiobook that tells the story of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Written by Alan Gratz and narrated by Bernardo de Paula, the audiobook takes listeners on a journey through the eyes of four young people who were directly affected by the tragedy.

The story begins with Brandon, a 9-year-old boy who is visiting his father’s office in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11. As he and his father ride the elevator to the top floor, they hear a loud explosion and feel the building shake. Brandon’s father realizes that they are under attack and tries to get his son to safety, but they are separated in the chaos.

Meanwhile, Reshmina, a 16-year-old Muslim girl living in Afghanistan, is watching the news of the attacks on TV with her family. She is horrified by what she sees and worries about the backlash that her community will face as a result of the actions of a few extremists.

In New York City, 13-year-old Scott is on his way to school when he sees the smoke rising from the World Trade Center. He rushes to the scene to try to help, but is turned away by the police. He decides to sneak past the barricades and help out in any way he can.

Finally, there is Jin, a 12-year-old boy who lives in Chinatown and is struggling to come to terms with his identity as a Chinese-American. When he sees the devastation caused by the attacks, he realizes that he must find a way to help his community and his city.

As the story unfolds, the lives of these four young people become intertwined in unexpected ways. Brandon must navigate the chaos of the collapsing towers and find a way to reunite with his father. Reshmina must deal with the fallout of the attacks on her community and find a way to make a difference in the world. Scott risks his own safety to help rescue survivors from the rubble, while Jin works to bring his community together in the face of tragedy.

Throughout the audiobook, Gratz does an excellent job of capturing the emotions and experiences of these young people. He shows how they are forced to grow up quickly in the face of unimaginable tragedy, and how they must find the strength to carry on in the aftermath of the attacks.

De Paula’s narration is also excellent, bringing the characters to life with his expressive voice and expert pacing. He captures the fear, confusion, and determination of the characters, making it easy for listeners to become fully immersed in the story.

One of the strengths of Ground Zero is its ability to tackle complex issues in a way that is accessible to young readers. Gratz does not shy away from the difficult topics of terrorism, Islamophobia, and racism, but he presents them in a way that is age-appropriate and thought-provoking. He shows how the actions of a few extremists can have far-reaching consequences, and how it is up to all of us to work towards a more peaceful and just world.

Overall, Ground Zero is a powerful and moving audiobook that is sure to resonate with listeners of all ages. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy, and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope.
