Grey Sister is the second book in the Book of the Ancestor series by Mark Lawrence. The audiobook is narrated by Helen Duff and is approximately 16 hours and 2 minutes long. The book continues the story of Nona Grey, a young girl with extraordinary abilities who is training to become a deadly assassin at the Convent of Sweet Mercy.

The story picks up where the first book, Red Sister, left off. Nona has survived the attack on the convent by the powerful sorcerer, Inquisitor Glokta, and has been promoted to the rank of Grey Sister. She is now one of the most skilled fighters in the convent and is tasked with protecting the Abbess, the leader of the convent.

The book is divided into three parts, each of which focuses on a different aspect of Nona’s training. In the first part, Nona is sent on a mission to the city of Verity to assassinate a powerful nobleman who is threatening the safety of the convent. This mission is complicated by the fact that Nona is being hunted by the Inquisition, who are determined to capture her and use her powers for their own purposes.

The second part of the book focuses on Nona’s training in the use of magic. She is taught by the mysterious Sister Kettle, who is one of the few people in the world who can control the power of the moon. Nona learns how to harness the power of the moon to enhance her abilities as a fighter and to control the minds of others.

The final part of the book sees Nona and her friends facing off against the Inquisition in a battle for the future of the world. The Inquisition has discovered a powerful weapon that could destroy the world, and Nona and her friends must find a way to stop them before it’s too late.

One of the strengths of Grey Sister is the depth of the world-building. Lawrence has created a rich and complex world, filled with magic, politics, and intrigue. The world is populated by a diverse cast of characters, each with their own motivations and agendas. The audiobook does an excellent job of bringing these characters to life, with Helen Duff giving each character a distinct voice and personality.

Another strength of the book is the character development. Nona is a complex and compelling character, and her growth throughout the book is both believable and satisfying. She is not a perfect hero, but rather a flawed and vulnerable young woman who is struggling to find her place in the world. The supporting characters are also well-developed, with each one having their own unique backstory and personality.

The action scenes in the book are also well-written and exciting. Lawrence has a talent for writing fight scenes that are both visceral and cinematic. The audiobook does an excellent job of conveying the intensity of these scenes, with Helen Duff’s narration adding to the tension and excitement.

One of the few weaknesses of the book is the pacing. The first part of the book is slow-paced, with a lot of time spent on Nona’s mission in Verity. While this section is important for setting up the rest of the book, it does drag on a bit too long. The second part of the book, which focuses on Nona’s training in magic, is also slow-paced, with a lot of time spent on exposition and world-building.

Overall, Grey Sister is an excellent audiobook that builds on the strengths of the first book in the series. The world-building is rich and complex, the characters are well-developed, and the action scenes are exciting. While the pacing can be slow at times, the audiobook is still a compelling and engaging listen. Fans of the first book in the series, as well as fans of epic fantasy in general, will not be disappointed.
