The story follows Harry Dresden, a wizard and private investigator, as he tries to stop a group of ghosts from wreaking havoc on the city of Chicago. The group discovers that Bianca is planning to use Lydia to summon a powerful demon named the Nightmare. The Nightmare is a creature of pure evil that feeds on fear and can only be defeated by a powerful wizard. Harry realizes that he is the only one who can stop the Nightmare, but he is hesitant to do so because of the danger involved.
Despite his reservations, Harry decides to confront the Nightmare. He is able to defeat it with the help of his friends and allies, but not before suffering a serious injury. The group is able to rescue Lydia and stop Bianca, but not before the city is left in ruins.
The audiobook is filled with action, suspense, and humor. James Marsters does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life, especially Harry Dresden. He captures Harry’s wit and sarcasm perfectly, making the audiobook a joy to listen to.

Harry’s friendship with Michael and Thomas is particularly well-developed, as is his complicated relationship with Karrin Murphy.
