Fool’s Errand is the first book in The Tawny Man trilogy by Robin Hobb. It is a continuation of the story of FitzChivalry Farseer, the protagonist of the Farseer trilogy. The audiobook is narrated by James Langton and runs for approximately 23 hours and 9 minutes.

The story picks up fifteen years after the events of the Farseer trilogy. Fitz has retired from his life as an assassin and is living a quiet life as Tom Badgerlock, a minor nobleman in Buckkeep. He is content with his life, but he is haunted by the memories of his past and the people he has lost. He is also still bonded to the Fool, his closest friend and confidant, who has disappeared without a trace.

Fitz’s peaceful life is disrupted when he receives a message from the Fool, who is in danger and needs his help. Fitz sets out on a journey to find the Fool, but he soon discovers that he is not the only one looking for him. The Pale Woman, a powerful and mysterious figure, is also searching for the Fool, and she will stop at nothing to find him.

As Fitz travels through the Six Duchies, he is reunited with old friends and enemies. He also meets new characters, including a young girl named Hap, who becomes his apprentice. Fitz’s journey is filled with danger and adventure, as he faces assassins, dragons, and other threats.

One of the strengths of Fool’s Errand is its character development. Fitz is a complex and flawed character, and his struggles with his past and his relationships with the people around him are compelling. The audiobook does an excellent job of capturing Fitz’s voice and emotions, and James Langton’s narration is engaging and immersive.

The other characters in the book are also well-developed. Hap, Fitz’s apprentice, is a likable and sympathetic character, and her relationship with Fitz is one of the highlights of the book. The Fool, who is absent for much of the book, is still a presence in Fitz’s thoughts and memories, and his absence adds to the tension and mystery of the story.

The world-building in Fool’s Errand is also impressive. The Six Duchies are a rich and detailed setting, and the audiobook does a good job of bringing the world to life. The magic system is also well-developed, and the dragons and other magical creatures are fascinating.

The plot of Fool’s Errand is slow-paced, but it is also engaging and well-crafted. The book is more character-driven than plot-driven, and the focus is on Fitz’s journey of self-discovery and his relationships with the people around him. The audiobook does an excellent job of capturing the emotional depth of the story, and the pacing is well-suited to the character-driven nature of the plot.

One of the criticisms of Fool’s Errand is that it is a slow start to the trilogy. The book is primarily focused on setting up the plot and reintroducing the characters from the Farseer trilogy. However, the slow pace is necessary to establish the emotional stakes of the story and to set up the conflicts that will drive the rest of the trilogy.

Overall, Fool’s Errand is an excellent audiobook and a strong start to The Tawny Man trilogy. The character development, world-building, and plot are all well-crafted, and the audiobook does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Fans of the Farseer trilogy will enjoy revisiting Fitz and his world, and new readers will find a rich and engaging fantasy world to explore.
