Empire of Sand is the first book in The Books of Ambha series by Tasha Suri. The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani and was published by Hachette Audio in 2018. The story is set in a world inspired by Mughal India and follows the journey of a young woman named Mehr who is caught between two worlds – the world of her mother’s people, the Ambhan nobility, and the world of her father’s people, the Amrithi nomads.

The story begins with Mehr, a half-Amrithi, half-Ambhan girl, living with her father and younger sister in a small village on the outskirts of the Ambhan Empire. Mehr’s father is a powerful Amrithi mystic who has taught her how to use her own magic to control the dreams of others. However, Mehr’s mother was an Ambhan noblewoman who died when Mehr was young, and her father’s magic has made her an outcast in Ambhan society.

Despite her father’s warnings, Mehr is drawn to the glittering world of the Ambhan nobility and dreams of one day being accepted by them. However, her dreams are shattered when her father is arrested by the Ambhan Emperor’s mystics and she is forced to marry one of them in order to save her family.

Mehr’s new husband, Amun, is a powerful mystic who is tasked with finding and destroying the Amrithi people, who are seen as a threat to the Ambhan Empire. However, Mehr soon discovers that Amun is not the heartless monster she thought he was and that he too is caught between two worlds – the world of his Ambhan masters and the world of his Amrithi heritage.

As Mehr and Amun grow closer, they begin to uncover a plot to destroy the Amrithi people and seize control of the Empire. Together, they must navigate the treacherous politics of the Ambhan court and use their magic to stop the conspirators before it’s too late.

The audiobook is narrated by Soneela Nankani, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Her voice is clear and easy to understand, and she does a great job of differentiating between the various characters. Her narration is particularly effective during the dream sequences, where she uses her voice to create a dreamlike atmosphere that is both eerie and captivating.

One of the strengths of the audiobook is the world-building. Suri has created a rich and detailed world that is inspired by Mughal India but is also entirely its own. The audiobook does an excellent job of bringing this world to life, with Nankani’s narration helping to create a vivid picture of the Empire and its people.

Another strength of the audiobook is the character development. Mehr is a complex and compelling protagonist who is torn between her loyalty to her Amrithi heritage and her desire to be accepted by the Ambhan nobility. Amun is also a fascinating character, as he struggles to reconcile his loyalty to the Empire with his love for Mehr and his Amrithi heritage.

The audiobook also does an excellent job of exploring themes of identity, power, and oppression. Mehr’s struggle to find her place in the world and Amun’s struggle to reconcile his two identities are both powerful examples of the ways in which identity can be both empowering and limiting. The audiobook also explores the ways in which power can be used to oppress and marginalize certain groups, as the Amrithi people are hunted and persecuted by the Ambhan Empire.

Overall, Empire of Sand is an excellent audiobook that is well worth listening to. The world-building, character development, and exploration of themes are all top-notch, and Nankani’s narration is excellent. If you’re a fan of fantasy or historical fiction, or if you’re just looking for a great audiobook to listen to, then Empire of Sand is definitely worth checking out.
