Dragon Pearl is a science fiction novel written by Yoon Ha Lee and published in 2019. The audiobook version of the novel is narrated by Kim Mai Guest and is approximately 10 hours and 23 minutes long. The story follows the adventures of a young fox spirit named Min, who sets out on a quest to find her missing brother and clear his name of a crime he did not commit.

The novel is set in a futuristic world where humans and various alien species coexist. The story takes place in the Thousand Worlds, a vast network of planets and space stations connected by a system of gates. The Thousand Worlds are governed by the powerful and mysterious Terraforming Corps, which controls the gates and the technology that allows them to manipulate the environment of planets to make them habitable.

Min is a fox spirit, a shape-shifting creature with magical powers. She lives on the impoverished planet of Jinju with her family, who are all fox spirits like her. Min’s mother is a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox spirit, and her father is a human. Min’s older brother, Jun, is a cadet in the Space Forces, the military branch of the Terraforming Corps. Jun is accused of deserting his post and stealing a valuable artifact called the Dragon Pearl, which has the power to control the gates.

Min is convinced that her brother is innocent and sets out to find him and clear his name. She disguises herself as a cadet and stows away on a spaceship bound for the Space Forces’ headquarters. Along the way, she meets a diverse cast of characters, including aliens, robots, and other fox spirits. She also discovers that the Dragon Pearl is not just a valuable artifact, but a powerful weapon that could destroy the Thousand Worlds if it falls into the wrong hands.

The audiobook version of Dragon Pearl is narrated by Kim Mai Guest, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Guest’s voice is clear and expressive, and she does a great job of differentiating between the various characters. She also captures the humor and excitement of the story, making it a fun and engaging listen.

One of the strengths of Dragon Pearl is its world-building. Yoon Ha Lee has created a rich and detailed universe, filled with interesting and diverse alien species. Each planet and space station has its own unique culture and history, and the Terraforming Corps’ technology is both fascinating and terrifying. The Thousand Worlds feel like a real and lived-in place, and it’s easy to get lost in the story’s immersive setting.

Another strength of the novel is its characters. Min is a likable and relatable protagonist, and her journey is both exciting and emotional. She is brave and resourceful, but also vulnerable and flawed. Her relationships with her family and friends are complex and nuanced, and her interactions with the other characters are often humorous and heartwarming.

The supporting cast of characters is also well-developed and memorable. There’s Haneul, a dragon cadet who becomes Min’s friend and ally; Sujin, a robot who serves as Min’s mentor; and the various alien species that Min encounters on her journey. Each character has their own unique personality and backstory, and they all contribute to the story in meaningful ways.

The plot of Dragon Pearl is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. The story is a blend of science fiction and Korean mythology, and Yoon Ha Lee does an excellent job of weaving these elements together. The mystery of the Dragon Pearl and Jun’s disappearance is compelling, and the stakes are high as Min races against time to clear her brother’s name and prevent the artifact from falling into the wrong hands.

Overall, Dragon Pearl is a fantastic audiobook that is sure to delight fans of science fiction and fantasy. Yoon Ha Lee’s world-building is top-notch, and the characters are likable and engaging. Kim Mai Guest’s narration is excellent, and she brings the story to life with her expressive voice. Whether you’re a fan of audiobooks or just looking for a fun and exciting story, Dragon Pearl is definitely worth a listen.
