The story begins with Axe, a former soldier, who is struggling to come to terms with his past. He is haunted by the memories of his time in the military and is finding it difficult to adjust to his new life as a trainee in the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Axe is also dealing with the guilt of having killed his own father, who was a traitor to the vampire society.
Elise, on the other hand, is a member of the aristocracy and has always lived a privileged life. However, she is not content with the life that has been laid out for her and wants to make a difference in the world. She decides to join the Black Dagger Brotherhood as a trainee, much to the dismay of her family.
Axe and Elise are paired together as training partners and are initially wary of each other. However, as they spend more time together, they begin to develop feelings for each other. Their relationship is complicated by the fact that Axe is a commoner and Elise is a member of the aristocracy. They also have to deal with the disapproval of their fellow trainees and the Brotherhood.
As Axe and Elise navigate their way through their relationship, they also have to deal with a new threat to the vampire society. A group of rogue vampires, known as the Lessening Society, are targeting the Brotherhood and their allies. The Brotherhood must work together to stop the Lessening Society before they can cause any more damage.
The audiobook is narrated by Jim Frangione, who does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. His narration is clear and easy to understand, and he does a great job of conveying the emotions of the characters. Frangione’s narration adds an extra layer of depth to the story and makes it even more engaging.
One of the things that I enjoyed about the audiobook was the world-building. J.R. Ward has created a rich and complex world, full of interesting characters and intricate relationships. The audiobook does a great job of bringing this world to life, and I found myself getting lost in the story.
