Asunder is the third novel in the Dragon Age series, written by David Gaider and published in 2011. The audiobook version of the novel is narrated by Gildart Jackson and runs for approximately 13 hours and 26 minutes. Asunder is set in the world of Thedas, a land of magic and mythical creatures, and follows the story of a group of characters as they navigate the political and social upheaval caused by the mage rebellion.

The novel begins with a prologue that sets the stage for the events to come. The prologue takes place in the Fade, a realm of dreams and spirits that exists alongside the physical world. The Fade is home to demons and other malevolent creatures, and mages are able to enter the Fade through their dreams. The prologue introduces the reader to a young mage named Cole, who is trapped in the Fade and struggling to hold onto his humanity.

The story then shifts to the city of Val Royeaux, the capital of the Orlesian Empire. Val Royeaux is home to the Chantry, a religious organization that worships the Maker and oversees the use of magic in Thedas. The Chantry is divided into two factions: the orthodox Andrastian Chantry, which believes that mages should be kept under strict control, and the reformist Divine Justinia V, who believes that mages should be allowed more freedom.

The novel’s main protagonist is a mage named Rhys, who is the son of a noble family in Val Royeaux. Rhys is a member of the Circle of Magi, a group of mages who are kept under strict control by the Chantry. Rhys is a compassionate and intelligent young man who is deeply troubled by the treatment of mages in Thedas. He is also in love with a fellow mage named Evangeline, who is a member of the Templar Order, the Chantry’s military arm.

Rhys is summoned to the Chantry by Divine Justinia V, who asks him to investigate a series of strange occurrences that have been happening in the Fade. Rhys is joined on his mission by a group of companions, including his friend and fellow mage Adrian, a dwarf named Shale, and a Qunari warrior named Tallis. The group sets out on a journey to the White Spire, a Circle of Magi stronghold in the Free Marches, where they hope to find answers to their questions.

As the group travels through Thedas, they encounter a number of obstacles and challenges. They are pursued by Templars who are suspicious of their motives, and they are forced to fight off demons and other creatures that inhabit the Fade. Along the way, they also meet a number of other characters who are struggling to survive in the midst of the mage rebellion.

One of these characters is Cole, the young mage who was introduced in the prologue. Cole is a spirit who has taken on human form, and he is struggling to understand the complexities of human emotions and relationships. He is drawn to Rhys and his companions, and he becomes an important ally in their quest.

Another important character is Fiona, the leader of the mage rebellion. Fiona is a former member of the Circle of Magi who has become disillusioned with the Chantry’s treatment of mages. She is a strong and charismatic leader who is determined to fight for mage rights, even if it means resorting to violence.

As the group approaches the White Spire, they are confronted by a group of Templars who are determined to stop them. A battle ensues, and Rhys and his companions are forced to use all of their skills and abilities to survive. In the end, they are able to defeat the Templars and make their way into the White Spire.

Once inside the White Spire, Rhys and his companions discover that the strange occurrences in the Fade are the result of a powerful mage who has been experimenting with blood magic. The mage, a former member of the Circle of Magi named Adrian, is Rhys’s friend and mentor. Adrian has been driven to madness by the Chantry’s treatment of mages, and he has turned to blood magic as a way to gain power and control.

Rhys and his companions are forced to confront Adrian and put an end to his experiments. In the end, they are able to defeat him and destroy his research. However, the battle has taken a toll on Rhys and his companions, and they are left to pick up the pieces and try to make sense of what has happened.

Asunder is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that explores the complex issues surrounding the mage rebellion in Thedas. The novel is filled with memorable characters, intense action sequences, and deep emotional moments. The audiobook version of the novel is expertly narrated by Gildart Jackson, who brings the characters and world of Thedas to life with his rich and nuanced performance. Overall, Asunder is a must-read (or must-listen) for fans of the Dragon Age series, and a great introduction to the world of Thedas for newcomers.
