Horus Rising is the first book in the Horus Heresy series, written by Dan Abnett and published in 2006. The audiobook version of Horus Rising is narrated by Toby Longworth and was released in 2010. The audiobook is 12 hours and 14 minutes long and is available on Audible.

The story of Horus Rising takes place in the 31st millennium, during the early days of the Imperium of Man. The Imperium is ruled by the Emperor, a powerful psychic being who has conquered most of the galaxy and is now leading humanity towards a new golden age. The Emperor has created the Space Marines, genetically enhanced soldiers who are the most powerful warriors in the galaxy. The Space Marines are divided into legions, each led by a Primarch, a superhuman being created by the Emperor.

The story follows the Luna Wolves legion, led by their Primarch, Horus. Horus is a charismatic leader who is loved by his legion and respected by his peers. He is also the Emperor’s favorite son and is seen as the future ruler of the Imperium. The Luna Wolves are sent to the planet of Davin to put down a rebellion. However, things go wrong when Horus is wounded in battle and is taken to a temple on the planet to be healed.

The temple is run by a group of Chaos worshippers who have been waiting for someone like Horus to come along. They believe that Horus is the chosen one who will lead them to victory over the Imperium. They use their dark powers to corrupt Horus and turn him against the Emperor. Horus becomes the first of the Primarchs to turn to Chaos and begins a rebellion against the Imperium.

The story is told from the perspective of Captain Garviel Loken, a member of the Luna Wolves legion. Loken is a loyal soldier who believes in the Emperor and the Imperium. He is also a skilled warrior and a respected member of the legion. Loken is chosen by Horus to be his personal bodyguard and is given access to the inner workings of the rebellion.

The audiobook version of Horus Rising is a great way to experience the story. Toby Longworth does an excellent job of narrating the book and bringing the characters to life. His voice is clear and easy to understand, and he does a great job of differentiating between the different characters. Longworth’s narration adds a lot of depth to the story and makes it more engaging.

One of the things that makes Horus Rising such a great audiobook is the world-building. Dan Abnett has created a rich and detailed universe that is full of interesting characters and factions. The audiobook does a great job of bringing this universe to life and making it feel real. The descriptions of the different planets, ships, and weapons are vivid and detailed, and the narration helps to bring them to life.

Another great thing about the audiobook is the pacing. The story moves at a brisk pace and never feels slow or boring. The action scenes are exciting and well-written, and the quieter moments are full of tension and intrigue. The audiobook does a great job of balancing these different elements and keeping the listener engaged throughout.

The characters in Horus Rising are also well-written and interesting. Horus is a complex character who is torn between his loyalty to the Emperor and his desire for power. Loken is a loyal soldier who is struggling to understand what is happening to his legion and his Primarch. The other members of the Luna Wolves are also well-written and have their own personalities and motivations.

The audiobook also does a great job of exploring the themes of the story. The conflict between loyalty and ambition is a central theme of the book, and the audiobook does a great job of exploring this theme through the characters and their actions. The audiobook also explores the idea of corruption and how it can spread through an organization or society.

Overall, Horus Rising is a great audiobook that is well worth listening to. The story is engaging and well-written, the characters are interesting and well-developed, and the world-building is rich and detailed. The audiobook version of the book is well-narrated and adds a lot of depth to the story. If you are a fan of science fiction or Warhammer 40,000, then Horus Rising is definitely worth checking out.
