Shadow and Bone is the first book in the Shadow and Bone Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. The audiobook is narrated by Lauren Fortgang and was published by Audible Studios in 2012. The audiobook has a runtime of 8 hours and 56 minutes.

The story is set in a fictional world called Ravka, which is inspired by Russia. Ravka is divided by a magical barrier called the Shadow Fold, which is filled with monsters called volcra. The story follows a young orphan girl named Alina Starkov, who discovers that she has a rare and powerful ability to summon light. Alina is taken away from her mundane life as a mapmaker and brought to the royal court to train as a Grisha, a group of magical soldiers who serve the kingdom of Ravka.

The audiobook is narrated by Lauren Fortgang, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Fortgang’s narration is clear and easy to understand, and she does a great job of differentiating between the various characters in the story. Her pacing is also spot-on, and she keeps the listener engaged throughout the entire audiobook.

One of the things that I really enjoyed about the audiobook was the world-building. Leigh Bardugo has created a rich and detailed world that is filled with magic, politics, and intrigue. The world of Ravka is inspired by Russia, and Bardugo does an excellent job of incorporating Russian culture and folklore into the story. The Shadow Fold, in particular, is a fascinating concept, and Bardugo does a great job of describing the horrors that lurk within it.

The characters in the story are also well-developed and interesting. Alina is a relatable protagonist who is easy to root for. She is initially hesitant to embrace her powers, but as the story progresses, she becomes more confident and self-assured. The other characters in the story, such as the Darkling and Mal, are also well-written and complex. The Darkling, in particular, is a fascinating character who is both charming and dangerous.

The plot of the audiobook is fast-paced and engaging. The story is filled with twists and turns, and there is never a dull moment. The audiobook is also well-structured, with each chapter building on the previous one. The climax of the story is particularly exciting, and it sets up the rest of the trilogy nicely.

Overall, I would highly recommend the Shadow and Bone audiobook to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels. The audiobook is well-narrated, and the story is engaging and well-written. The world-building is excellent, and the characters are relatable and interesting. If you’re looking for a new fantasy series to dive into, the Shadow and Bone Trilogy is definitely worth checking out.
