The Enemy begins with Jack Reacher being summoned to the Pentagon to meet with Leon Garber, the head of the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID). Garber informs Reacher that a two-star general has been found dead in a motel room in North Carolina, and that the CID has reason to believe that Reacher may have been involved in the general’s death.
Reacher is shocked by the accusation, as he has never met the general and has no idea why anyone would think he had anything to do with his death.
