The story of Silverthorn picks up where the previous book, Magician, left off. Pug, the young magician, has returned from the world of Kelewan with his friend Tomas, who has been transformed into a powerful warrior. They are greeted as heroes, but their joy is short-lived when Princess Anita, the daughter of the Duke of Krondor, falls ill with a mysterious illness.
Pug and Tomas are sent on a quest to find the antidote to the illness, which is known as Silverthorn. They are joined on their journey by a group of companions, including Arutha, the Duke’s son, and Martin, a former thief turned nobleman. Together, they travel across the land of Midkemia, facing many dangers and obstacles along the way.
One of the strengths of Silverthorn is its world-building. Feist has created a rich and detailed world, filled with different cultures, races, and creatures. The audiobook version does an excellent job of bringing this world to life, with Peter Joyce’s narration adding depth and texture to the story.
The characters in Silverthorn are also well-developed and engaging. Pug, in particular, is a fascinating character, as he struggles to come to terms with his newfound power and the responsibilities that come with it. Tomas, too, is an interesting character, as he grapples with his own inner demons and the consequences of his actions.
The plot of Silverthorn is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. Feist is a master of pacing, and the audiobook version does an excellent job of conveying the tension and excitement of the story.
One of the standout features of the audiobook version of Silverthorn is Peter Joyce’s narration. Joyce has a deep, resonant voice that is perfect for the epic fantasy genre. He does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life, giving each one a distinct voice and personality.
