The story takes place in a world where magic is based on metals. Allomancers can ingest and burn metals to gain various powers, such as enhanced strength, speed, and senses. Waxillium is a powerful Allomancer who can push and pull on metals, allowing him to fly through the air and manipulate objects from a distance.
The book begins with Waxillium investigating a series of murders that seem to be connected to a group of rebels known as the Set. The Set is a group of Allomancers who believe that the nobility should be overthrown and replaced with a new ruling class. Waxillium is joined in his investigation by his friend Wayne, a fellow lawman who is also an Allomancer.
As they investigate the murders, Waxillium and Wayne discover that the Set is planning a major attack on the city of Elendel. The attack is being led by a mysterious figure known as Bleeder, who is able to control people’s emotions and thoughts. Bleeder is also an Allomancer, but her powers are different from those of Waxillium and Wayne.
As the attack on Elendel approaches, Waxillium and Wayne must race against time to stop the Set and Bleeder. Along the way, they are aided by Marasi, Waxillium’s fiancée, who is also a lawman and a scholar of Allomancy. Marasi is not an Allomancer herself, but she is able to use her knowledge of Allomancy to help Waxillium and Wayne in their investigation.
One of the strengths of Shadows of Self is its characters. Waxillium, Wayne, and Marasi are all well-developed and interesting characters. Waxillium is a complex character who struggles with his duty as a lawman and his desire to protect his loved ones. Wayne is a more lighthearted character who provides comic relief, but he also has a tragic backstory that is explored in the book. Marasi is a strong and intelligent character who is not defined by her relationship with Waxillium.
Another strength of the book is its worldbuilding. Sanderson has created a rich and detailed world that is full of interesting characters and cultures. The city of Elendel is a fascinating place, with its mix of old-fashioned nobility and modern technology. The Allomantic magic system is also well-developed and adds a unique element to the story.
The audiobook narration by Michael Kramer is excellent. Kramer has narrated all of the Mistborn books, and he does an excellent job of bringing the characters and world to life. His voice is clear and easy to listen to, and he does a great job of differentiating between the various characters.
One of the weaknesses of the book is its pacing. The first half of the book is slow and focused on the investigation of the murders. While this is necessary for the plot, it can be a bit tedious at times. The second half of the book is much more action-packed and exciting, but it feels rushed in comparison to the first half.
Another weakness of the book is its plot twists. While there are some interesting twists and turns in the story, some of them feel a bit contrived and predictable. The identity of Bleeder, for example, is not particularly surprising, and the reveal feels a bit forced.
Overall, Shadows of Self is a strong addition to the Mistborn series. It has well-developed characters, a richly detailed world, and an interesting plot. While it has some weaknesses, such as its pacing and plot twists, it is still an enjoyable read/listen for fans of the series. The audiobook narration by Michael Kramer is excellent and adds to the overall experience of the book.
