The story picks up shortly after the events of the first book, Theft of Swords. Royce and Hadrian are still working as thieves for hire, but they are also trying to uncover the truth behind a conspiracy that threatens the kingdom. They are joined by a new character, Arista, who is the princess of the kingdom and has her own reasons for wanting to uncover the truth.
The audiobook is just over 23 hours long and is divided into three parts. The first part focuses on Royce and Hadrian’s attempts to infiltrate a castle and steal a valuable artifact. This leads them to uncover a plot to overthrow the king and replace him with a puppet ruler. The second part of the book focuses on Arista’s attempts to uncover the truth behind her father’s death and the conspiracy that threatens the kingdom. The third part brings all of the characters together as they work to stop the conspiracy and save the kingdom.
One of the strengths of the audiobook is the narration by Tim Gerard Reynolds. He does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and giving each one a distinct voice. His pacing is also excellent, keeping the story moving at a good pace without rushing through important moments.
The story itself is well-written and engaging. The characters are well-developed and have distinct personalities and motivations. Royce and Hadrian are both likable characters, despite being thieves, and their banter and friendship is one of the highlights of the book. Arista is also a strong character, and her journey from sheltered princess to capable leader is well-done.
