The story follows Lady Everleigh Blair, a member of the royal family who is known as the “thirteenth” because she is the thirteenth in line for the throne. Everleigh is a gladiator, forced to fight in the arena for the entertainment of the ruling class. She is also a powerful magic user, but she keeps her abilities hidden to avoid drawing attention to herself.
The story begins with Everleigh attending a royal event where she witnesses the massacre of her entire family, including the queen. Everleigh manages to escape the massacre and goes into hiding. She is determined to avenge her family and take back the throne that is rightfully hers.
As the story progresses, Everleigh discovers that the massacre was orchestrated by the queen’s advisor, Lord Mortimer. Mortimer is a powerful magic user who wants to take control of the kingdom for himself. Everleigh teams up with a group of rebels who are also fighting against Mortimer’s rule. Together, they plan to overthrow Mortimer and restore Everleigh to the throne.
The audiobook is narrated by Lauren Fortgang, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Fortgang’s narration is clear and easy to understand, and she does an excellent job of differentiating between the various characters. Her pacing is also spot on, and she keeps the story moving at a steady pace.
One of the things that I enjoyed about the audiobook was the world-building. Jennifer Estep has created a rich and detailed world that is full of magic and intrigue. The ruling class is made up of powerful magic users who are feared and respected by the common people. The gladiatorial games are a popular form of entertainment, and the rebels are fighting against the oppressive rule of the ruling class.
The characters in the story are also well-developed and interesting. Everleigh is a strong and determined protagonist who is easy to root for. She is a skilled fighter and a powerful magic user, but she is also vulnerable and has a tragic backstory. The other characters in the story, including the rebels and the ruling class, are also well-developed and have their own motivations and agendas.
The plot of the story is fast-paced and action-packed. There are plenty of fight scenes and magical battles, as well as political intrigue and betrayal. The story is full of twists and turns, and there are several surprises along the way. The ending sets up the next book in the series and leaves the reader wanting more.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the Kill the Queen audiobook. The narration was excellent, the world-building was rich and detailed, and the characters were well-developed and interesting. The story was fast-paced and action-packed, and there were plenty of surprises along the way. I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys fantasy and action-packed stories.
