The story of Hounded follows the adventures of Atticus O’Sullivan, a 2,000-year-old druid who lives in modern-day Arizona. Atticus is the last of his kind, having survived centuries of persecution and war. He has settled in the town of Tempe, where he runs an occult bookstore and tries to keep a low profile.
However, Atticus’s peaceful existence is disrupted when he is hounded by a powerful Celtic god named Aenghus Óg. Aenghus wants a magical sword that Atticus possesses, and he will stop at nothing to get it. Atticus must use all of his druidic powers and cunning to outwit Aenghus and protect himself and his friends.
The plot of Hounded is fast-paced and action-packed, with plenty of twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. The story is told from Atticus’s point of view, which allows the listener to get inside his head and understand his motivations and thought processes.
One of the strengths of Hounded is its world-building. Hearne has created a rich and detailed mythology that draws on Celtic and other mythological traditions. The world of the Iron Druid Chronicles is populated by gods, goddesses, faeries, werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural beings. Hearne does an excellent job of weaving these different elements together into a cohesive and believable whole.
Another strength of Hounded is its characters. Atticus is a likable and relatable protagonist, with a dry wit and a strong sense of justice. He is also a complex character, with a tragic past and a deep sense of responsibility for the world around him. The supporting cast is also well-drawn, with memorable characters like Oberon, Atticus’s faithful Irish wolfhound, and Granuaile, a young woman who becomes Atticus’s apprentice.
The audiobook version of Hounded is narrated by Luke Daniels, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. Daniels has a wide range of voices and accents, which he uses to great effect in distinguishing the different characters. He also captures the humor and wit of the story, making the audiobook an enjoyable and entertaining listen.
One of the standout features of the audiobook version of Hounded is the inclusion of a bonus short story, “The Grimoire of the Lamb.” This story takes place after the events of Hounded and features Atticus and Oberon on a new adventure. The story is narrated by both Atticus and Oberon, which adds an extra layer of humor and charm to the tale.
Overall, Hounded is an excellent start to the Iron Druid Chronicles. The audiobook version, narrated by Luke Daniels, is a highly entertaining and engaging listen. The story is fast-paced and action-packed, with a rich mythology and well-drawn characters. Fans of urban fantasy and mythology will find much to enjoy in Hounded and the rest of the Iron Druid Chronicles.
