The Poldark Saga is set in Cornwall, England, during the late 18th century. The series follows the life of Ross Poldark, a former soldier who returns home to find his father dead, his estate in ruins, and his former love, Elizabeth, engaged to his cousin, Francis. Ross decides to rebuild his estate and start a new life, but he faces many challenges along the way.
Demelza picks up where the first book, Ross Poldark, left off. Ross has married his kitchen maid, Demelza, and they have a daughter named Julia. Ross is still struggling to rebuild his estate, but he is also dealing with the aftermath of a mine collapse that killed several of his workers. Ross is determined to find out who is responsible for the collapse and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, Demelza is struggling to fit in with the upper-class society of Cornwall. She is constantly reminded of her humble beginnings and is often looked down upon by the other ladies. Demelza is also dealing with her own personal demons, including her jealousy of Ross’s former love, Elizabeth.
The audiobook version of Demelza is expertly narrated by Oliver Hembrough. Hembrough’s voice is clear and easy to understand, and he does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. His accents and inflections are spot-on, and he is able to convey the emotions of the characters in a way that is both believable and engaging.
One of the strengths of Demelza is its character development. Winston Graham does an excellent job of fleshing out the characters and making them feel like real people. Ross is a complex character who is both flawed and heroic. He is determined to do what is right, but he is also impulsive and sometimes makes poor decisions. Demelza, on the other hand, is a strong and resilient character who is determined to make a better life for herself and her family. She is fiercely loyal to Ross, but she is also independent and not afraid to speak her mind.
The supporting characters in Demelza are also well-developed. Francis, Ross’s cousin, is struggling with his own demons and is often at odds with Ross. Elizabeth, Ross’s former love, is torn between her loyalty to her husband and her feelings for Ross. George Warleggan, Ross’s arch-nemesis, is a conniving and ruthless businessman who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.
One of the themes of Demelza is social class. Demelza is constantly reminded of her humble beginnings and is often looked down upon by the upper-class society of Cornwall. Ross, on the other hand, is determined to bridge the gap between the classes and is often at odds with the wealthy landowners who control the county. This theme is explored in depth throughout the book and adds an interesting layer to the story.
Another theme of Demelza is love and loyalty. Ross and Demelza’s relationship is tested throughout the book, but their love for each other remains strong. Demelza is fiercely loyal to Ross, even when he makes mistakes, and Ross is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family.
Overall, Demelza is an excellent audiobook that is well worth the listen. The characters are well-developed, the narration is excellent, and the story is engaging and thought-provoking. If you enjoyed the first book in The Poldark Saga, Ross Poldark, then you will definitely enjoy Demelza.
