Dead Beat is the seventh book in The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. It was published in 2005 and is available in audiobook format. The audiobook is narrated by James Marsters, who has narrated all of the books in the series so far.

The story follows Harry Dresden, a wizard and private investigator in Chicago. In this book, Harry is hired by a group of necromancers to find a rare book called the Word of Kemmler. The necromancers want the book so they can perform a powerful ritual that will allow them to control the dead. Harry is reluctant to help them, but he knows that if he doesn’t, they will find someone else who will.

As Harry begins his search for the book, he discovers that he is not the only one looking for it. The book is also being sought by a group of vampires who want to use it to gain power over the other supernatural beings in Chicago. Harry must race against time to find the book before the vampires do.

The audiobook is 14 hours and 34 minutes long and is divided into 39 chapters. The narration by James Marsters is excellent, as always. He brings the characters to life and captures the tone of the story perfectly.

One of the things that I love about this audiobook is the way that Jim Butcher weaves together different elements of the supernatural world. In this book, we see necromancers, vampires, zombies, and even a talking skull. Butcher does an excellent job of making all of these elements feel like they belong in the same world.

Another thing that I love about this audiobook is the character development. Harry Dresden is a complex character, and we see him grow and change throughout the series. In this book, we see him struggling with his own morality. He knows that helping the necromancers is wrong, but he also knows that if he doesn’t, they will find someone else who will. This internal struggle adds depth to the character and makes him more relatable.

The supporting characters in this audiobook are also well-developed. We see more of Bob, the talking skull, in this book, and he is as entertaining as ever. We also see more of Butters, a medical examiner who becomes involved in Harry’s investigation. Butters is a great addition to the series, and I hope we see more of him in future books.

The plot of this audiobook is fast-paced and action-packed. There are several intense fight scenes, and the stakes are high throughout the book. The climax of the book is particularly exciting, and I found myself on the edge of my seat as I listened.

One of the things that I appreciate about this audiobook is the way that Jim Butcher incorporates humor into the story. Despite the serious subject matter, there are several laugh-out-loud moments in the book. This helps to balance out the darker elements of the story and makes it more enjoyable to listen to.

Overall, I highly recommend Dead Beat to fans of urban fantasy and audiobooks. The narration by James Marsters is excellent, and the story is engaging and well-written. If you haven’t read or listened to any of The Dresden Files books yet, I suggest starting with the first book in the series, Storm Front, and working your way through the series in order.
