The story picks up right where the previous book, Ghost Story, left off. Harry Dresden, the wizard detective, has just returned from the afterlife and is now the Winter Knight, the enforcer for Mab, the Queen of Air and Darkness. Harry is struggling to come to terms with his new role and the fact that he is now bound to Mab. He is also dealing with the aftermath of his death and the consequences of his actions in the previous book.
The book starts with Harry being summoned by Mab to attend a meeting of the Winter Court. He is introduced to the other members of the court, including Maeve, the Winter Lady, and Sarissa, her sister. Harry is also reunited with his old friend, Thomas Raith, a vampire of the White Court. Mab assigns Harry a task, to kill Maeve, who has gone rogue and is causing chaos in the mortal world.
Harry is reluctant to carry out the task, as he believes that Maeve can be saved. He also has to deal with the fact that Maeve is his goddaughter, the daughter of his friend and former lover, Elaine. Harry decides to investigate Maeve’s actions and try to find a way to save her.
Harry’s investigation leads him to the island of Demonreach, a magical prison that he has been tasked with guarding. He discovers that Maeve is planning to release a powerful entity known as the Outsider, which could destroy the world. Harry also learns that he has a connection to Demonreach, and that it has been influencing his actions for years.
Harry is joined on his mission by his allies, including his apprentice, Molly Carpenter, and his half-brother, Thomas. They are also aided by the Winter Lady, Sarissa, who has her own reasons for wanting to stop Maeve. Together, they must navigate the dangerous politics of the Winter Court and face off against Maeve and her allies.
The audiobook is narrated by James Marsters, who has been the voice of Harry Dresden since the first book in the series. Marsters does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and capturing the tone of the story.
