The story of Career of Evil revolves around the private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin Ellacott. The book starts with a package being delivered to Robin at the office, which contains a severed leg. The package is addressed to Strike, and it becomes clear that the sender is someone from his past who has a grudge against him. Strike immediately suspects three people who he has had run-ins with in the past: Donald Laing, a former schoolmate who was expelled for violent behavior; Jeff Whittaker, Strike’s stepfather who physically abused him as a child; and Creed, a former client who was acquitted of murdering a woman.
As Strike and Robin try to identify the sender of the package, they are also working on a case involving a young woman named Margot Bamborough, who has gone missing. Margot was a temporary worker at a government office, and her disappearance has caused a stir in the media. Strike and Robin are hired by Margot’s family to find her, and they soon discover that Margot had been receiving threatening letters from someone who claimed to be a serial killer.
As Strike and Robin delve deeper into the case, they uncover a web of secrets and lies that lead them to suspect several people, including Margot’s boss, her ex-boyfriend, and a man who had been stalking her. Meanwhile, Strike’s personal life is also in turmoil as he deals with the fallout from his breakup with his girlfriend Charlotte, who is now engaged to another man.
