The story begins with a prologue that introduces the reader to Praxidike Meng, a botanist living on Ganymede, one of Jupiter’s moons. Prax is searching for his missing daughter, Mei, who was taken during a catastrophic event that destroyed much of the moon’s infrastructure. The prologue sets the stage for the rest of the book, as Prax’s search for his daughter becomes intertwined with the larger conflict between Earth and Mars.
The main story begins with the Rocinante crew, consisting of Captain James Holden, Naomi Nagata, Alex Kamal, and Amos Burton, being hired by the United Nations to investigate a distress call from a research vessel on Ganymede. The crew discovers that the research vessel was attacked by a new type of protomolecule hybrid, which is a combination of the alien protomolecule and human DNA. The hybrid is able to infect and control humans, turning them into violent and aggressive creatures.
Meanwhile, on Earth, Chrisjen Avasarala, a high-ranking UN official, is investigating a conspiracy involving a rogue Martian faction and the protomolecule. She enlists the help of Bobbie Draper, a Martian Marine who was present during the attack on Ganymede, to uncover the truth behind the conspiracy.
As the story progresses, the Rocinante crew and Avasarala’s team become aware of a larger conspiracy involving the protomolecule and its creators. They discover that the protomolecule was created by an ancient alien civilization that was destroyed by its own creation. The protomolecule was designed to create a new form of life, but it was also capable of destroying entire planets.
The conflict between Earth and Mars escalates as both factions try to gain control of the protomolecule. The Rocinante crew and Avasarala’s team work together to stop the protomolecule from falling into the wrong hands. They eventually discover that the protomolecule has been taken to Venus, where it is being used to create a new form of life.
The book ends with the Rocinante crew and Avasarala’s team successfully stopping the protomolecule from being used to destroy Earth and Mars. Prax is reunited with his daughter, Mei, and the crew of the Rocinante continues their journey through the solar system.
