Burned is a young adult novel written by Ellen Hopkins and published in 2006. The novel is a verse novel, which means that it is written in free verse poetry. The novel tells the story of a teenage girl named Pattyn who is struggling to find her place in the world. Pattyn is raised in a strict Mormon household where she is expected to be obedient and submissive. However, Pattyn is not content with this life and begins to rebel against her family’s expectations. The novel explores themes of religion, family, love, and self-discovery.

The audiobook version of Burned is narrated by Laura Flanagan. Flanagan’s narration is excellent, and she captures the emotions of the characters perfectly. Her voice is clear and easy to understand, and she does an excellent job of bringing the story to life.

The novel begins with Pattyn, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a small town in Nevada. Pattyn is the oldest of seven children and is expected to help take care of her younger siblings. Her father is a strict Mormon who believes in the traditional gender roles of men being the head of the household and women being submissive. Pattyn’s mother is also submissive and does not stand up to her husband’s strict rules.

Pattyn is unhappy with her life and feels trapped in her small town. She dreams of leaving and experiencing the world outside of her small town. Pattyn is also struggling with her faith and questions the teachings of the Mormon church. She is curious about sex and relationships, but her father has forbidden her from dating until she is 18.

Pattyn’s life changes when she meets a boy named Ethan. Ethan is a non-Mormon and is not afraid to challenge Pattyn’s beliefs. Pattyn is drawn to Ethan and begins to question her faith even more. She also begins to rebel against her father’s strict rules and starts to sneak out to see Ethan.

Pattyn’s rebellion does not go unnoticed, and her father becomes increasingly angry with her. He begins to physically abuse her, and Pattyn is forced to flee her home. She goes to live with her aunt J for the summer, where she begins to explore her sexuality and learns more about herself.

Throughout the novel, Pattyn struggles with her faith and her relationship with Ethan. She is torn between her desire to be with him and her fear of going against her family’s beliefs. She also struggles with her feelings of guilt and shame for disobeying her father and questioning her faith.

The audiobook version of Burned is an excellent way to experience the novel. Laura Flanagan’s narration is engaging and brings the story to life. The free verse poetry format of the novel is also well-suited for an audiobook, as it allows the listener to focus on the emotions and themes of the story without being distracted by the structure of the writing.

One of the strengths of Burned is its exploration of religion and faith. The novel raises important questions about the role of religion in our lives and the impact it can have on our relationships and sense of self. Pattyn’s struggle with her faith is relatable, and many readers will be able to identify with her questioning of the teachings of her church.

The novel also explores the theme of family and the impact that strict parenting can have on children. Pattyn’s father’s strict rules and physical abuse are a stark reminder of the dangers of authoritarian parenting. The novel shows the importance of open communication and understanding between parents and children.

Another strength of Burned is its exploration of sexuality and relationships. The novel is frank and honest about the challenges of navigating relationships as a teenager. Pattyn’s exploration of her sexuality is handled with sensitivity and realism, and the novel does an excellent job of showing the impact that societal expectations can have on young women.

Overall, Burned is an excellent novel that explores important themes and issues facing teenagers today. The audiobook version of the novel is an excellent way to experience the story, and Laura Flanagan’s narration is engaging and well-suited to the free verse poetry format of the novel. I would highly recommend Burned to anyone looking for a thought-provoking and engaging young adult novel.
