A Voice in the Wind

The novel begins with Hadassah, a young Jewish girl living in Jerusalem, who is forced to flee her home with her family when the Romans invade the city. She is eventually freed from slavery and returns to Jerusalem, where she becomes a leader in the Christian community. One of the strengths of A Voice in the Wind is its portrayal of the Roman Empire during the reign of Emperor Nero. Rivers does an excellent job of bringing the time period to life, and the listener can almost feel the tension and fear that the Christians must have felt during this time. The novel also does an excellent job of portraying the struggles that the early Christians faced, including persecution and martyrdom.

Another strength of the novel is its portrayal of the character of Lydia. Lydia is a strong and resilient character who remains steadfast in her faith despite the many hardships she faces. Her unwavering belief in God is inspiring, and her character serves as a reminder of the power of faith in the face of adversity.

The novel also does an excellent job of portraying the relationship between Lydia and Marcus. Their love story is both touching and tragic, and the listener can’t help but root for them throughout the novel. The obstacles they face, including the fact that Lydia is a slave, add depth and complexity to their relationship, and their eventual separation is heartbreaking.

One of the weaknesses of the novel is its pacing. The novel is quite long, and there are times when the story seems to drag. However, the excellent narration by Ferrone helps to keep the listener engaged, and the novel’s strong characters and themes make up for any pacing issues.
