A Closed and Common Orbit is a science fiction novel written by Becky Chambers and published in 2016. It is the second book in the Wayfarers series, following The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. The audiobook version of A Closed and Common Orbit is narrated by Patricia Rodriguez and Rachel Dulude, and was released in 2016 by HarperAudio.

The novel is set in a distant future where humans have colonized other planets and have formed alliances with other alien species. The story follows two main characters, Lovelace and Pepper, who are both trying to find their place in the universe.

Lovelace is an artificial intelligence (AI) who was originally designed to run a spaceship. However, after a catastrophic event, she is forced to leave the ship and is given a new body to inhabit. She is taken in by Pepper, a mechanic who lives on a planet called Port Coriol. Pepper is a former slave who was rescued by the crew of the Wayfarer, the spaceship from the first book in the series.

The novel alternates between Lovelace’s story and Pepper’s story. Lovelace is struggling to adjust to her new body and to understand what it means to be human. She is also haunted by memories of her past life as a spaceship AI. Pepper, on the other hand, is trying to help Lovelace adjust to her new life while also dealing with her own past trauma.

One of the strengths of the audiobook version of A Closed and Common Orbit is the narration. Patricia Rodriguez and Rachel Dulude both do an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. Rodriguez narrates Lovelace’s chapters, while Dulude narrates Pepper’s chapters. Both narrators have distinct voices and accents, which helps to differentiate the two characters.

Another strength of the audiobook is the world-building. Becky Chambers has created a rich and diverse universe, filled with different alien species and cultures. The audiobook helps to bring this universe to life, with the narrators using different accents and voices for the different characters. This helps to make the universe feel more real and immersive.

The novel also explores some interesting themes, such as identity, belonging, and what it means to be human. Lovelace is struggling to understand her new body and to find her place in the world. She is also grappling with the fact that she is no longer a spaceship AI, which was her original purpose. Pepper, on the other hand, is trying to come to terms with her past as a slave and to find a sense of belonging in her new life.

One of the weaknesses of the audiobook is the pacing. The novel is quite slow-paced, with a lot of focus on character development and world-building. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it can make the audiobook feel a bit slow at times. However, the narration is engaging enough to keep the listener interested.

Overall, A Closed and Common Orbit is a well-written and thought-provoking novel that is brought to life by the excellent narration in the audiobook version. The novel explores some interesting themes and has a rich and diverse universe that is brought to life by the narrators. While the pacing can be slow at times, the audiobook is still an enjoyable and immersive experience.
