The story begins with Emi, a college student, who is on her way to visit her family in Japan for the winter break. Emi is half-Japanese and half-American, and she has always felt like she doesn’t quite fit in with either culture. However, her trip to Japan takes a strange turn when she is attacked by a yokai, a supernatural creature from Japanese folklore.
Emi is saved by a mysterious young man named Shiro, who reveals that he is a yokai hunter and that Emi is in danger because she is the vessel for the goddess Amaterasu. Shiro explains that Amaterasu has been trapped in the mortal realm for centuries and that Emi is the only one who can release her. However, in order to do so, Emi must perform a ritual that will require her to sacrifice her own life.
Emi is understandably hesitant to sacrifice herself, but she soon realizes that she has no choice. She is joined on her journey by Shiro and two other yokai hunters, Yumei and Hiro. Together, they must navigate the dangerous world of yokai and find a way to release Amaterasu before it’s too late.
One of the things that makes Red Winter such an engaging story is the world-building. Annette Marie has created a rich and detailed world that is steeped in Japanese mythology and folklore. The audiobook is filled with descriptions of yokai, their abilities, and their weaknesses. The world is also populated with a variety of interesting characters, both human and yokai.
The characters in Red Winter are another highlight of the audiobook. Emi is a relatable protagonist who is easy to root for. She is brave and determined, but she also has her flaws and vulnerabilities. Shiro is a mysterious and enigmatic character who is clearly hiding something, but his loyalty to Emi is never in doubt. Yumei and Hiro are also interesting characters who add depth to the story.
The audiobook is narrated by Emily Woo Zeller, who does an excellent job bringing the story to life. Zeller’s narration is clear and easy to understand, and she does a great job with the different voices and accents of the characters. Her performance adds to the overall atmosphere of the story and helps to immerse the listener in the world of Red Winter.
