The audiobook begins with Audrey Rose and Thomas boarding the RMS Etruria, excited to embark on a new adventure. However, their excitement is short-lived when they discover that the ship is hosting a traveling carnival, complete with fortune-tellers, acrobats, and a magician named Mephistopheles. Audrey Rose is immediately drawn to Mephistopheles, who seems to have a dark and mysterious past. However, her fascination with him is short-lived when passengers start turning up dead, and Audrey Rose and Thomas find themselves in the middle of a deadly game of cat and mouse with a mysterious killer.
One of the things that I loved about this audiobook was the setting. The RMS Etruria is a luxurious ocean liner, and Maniscalco does an excellent job of describing the opulence and grandeur of the ship. From the elegant dining rooms to the plush cabins, the audiobook transports you back in time to a bygone era of luxury travel. The addition of the traveling carnival adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story, and I loved the way that Maniscalco weaves in the different carnival acts and performers into the plot.
Another thing that I loved about this audiobook was the relationship between Audrey Rose and Thomas. Their banter and chemistry are as strong as ever, and I loved the way that their relationship continues to evolve throughout the story. However, their relationship is put to the test in this book, as they find themselves at odds over the investigation. Audrey Rose is determined to solve the murders and bring the killer to justice, while Thomas is more concerned with protecting Audrey Rose and keeping her safe. This tension adds an extra layer of depth to their relationship and makes for some compelling listening.
The mystery in this audiobook is also top-notch. Maniscalco does an excellent job of keeping the reader guessing until the very end. There are plenty of twists and turns, and just when you think you have it all figured out, Maniscalco throws in another curveball. The killer’s identity is a complete surprise, and I loved the way that Maniscalco ties everything together in the end.
One of the standout characters in this audiobook is Mephistopheles, the enigmatic magician. He is a fascinating character, and I loved the way that Maniscalco slowly reveals his backstory throughout the story. He is a complex character, and I found myself both drawn to him and repelled by him at the same time. Nicola Barber does an excellent job of bringing him to life, and her performance adds an extra layer of intrigue to the character.
Overall, Escaping from Houdini is an excellent addition to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. The audiobook is well-narrated, and the story is both thrilling and suspenseful. The setting is richly described, and the mystery is top-notch. If you’re a fan of historical fiction, murder mysteries, or just looking for a great audiobook to listen to, I highly recommend Escaping from Houdini.
