The story is set in two different time periods, the 18th century and the present day. The 18th-century storyline follows the life of Nella Clavinger, an apothecary who runs a secret business in London. She sells poisons to women who want to get rid of their abusive husbands or lovers. Nella’s business is a well-kept secret, and she has a set of strict rules that her clients must follow. However, her life takes a turn when she meets a twelve-year-old girl named Eliza Fanning, who comes to her shop seeking a poison to kill her abusive master. Nella takes Eliza under her wing and teaches her the art of apothecary.
The present-day storyline follows the life of Caroline Parcewell, a historian who is on a trip to London to escape her failing marriage. She stumbles upon an old apothecary bottle while mudlarking on the banks of the Thames. Intrigued by the bottle, Caroline sets out to uncover the history behind it. Her search leads her to Nella’s old shop, which is now a pub. She meets the pub owner, who tells her about the apothecary who used to run the shop. Caroline becomes obsessed with Nella’s story and sets out to uncover the truth behind her mysterious disappearance.
