The novel is set in North Carolina and begins with Bree attending a summer program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bree is a talented student and has been accepted into the program as part of a scholarship for gifted students. However, Bree is also dealing with the recent death of her mother and is struggling to come to terms with her grief.
On her first night at the university, Bree witnesses a group of students performing a magical ritual in the woods. She is shocked and confused by what she sees and decides to investigate further. Bree soon discovers that the students are part of a secret society called the Legendborn, who are descended from King Arthur and his knights and have magical powers.
Bree is initially skeptical of the Legendborn and their claims of magic, but she soon discovers that they are real and that she has a connection to them. Bree is a descendant of one of King Arthur’s knights and has inherited some of his magical powers. Bree is also a “Memory Keeper,” which means that she has the ability to remember things that have been erased from other people’s memories.
Bree is quickly drawn into the world of the Legendborn and becomes embroiled in a battle between them and a group of demon hunters called the Order of the Round Table. The Order is determined to destroy all magical beings, including the Legendborn, and Bree must use her powers to help the Legendborn fight back.
The novel is a fast-paced and action-packed adventure that combines elements of fantasy, mythology, and history. The world-building is rich and detailed, and the characters are well-developed and engaging. Bree is a strong and relatable protagonist who is dealing with real-world issues such as grief, identity, and racism, as well as the challenges of being a Memory Keeper and a member of the Legendborn.
One of the strengths of the audiobook version of Legendborn is the narration by Joniece Abbott-Pratt. Abbott-Pratt does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life and capturing the tone and atmosphere of the novel. Her voice is clear and expressive, and she does a great job of differentiating between the various characters and their accents and dialects.
Another strength of the audiobook is the pacing. The novel is quite long, but the audiobook never feels slow or boring. The action and suspense are well-paced, and the quieter moments are given the time and space they need to breathe and develop.
The novel also deals with important themes such as race, identity, and power. Bree is a black girl in a predominantly white world, and she must navigate the challenges of racism and prejudice while also dealing with the challenges of being a Memory Keeper and a member of the Legendborn. The novel does an excellent job of exploring these themes in a nuanced and thoughtful way, and it never feels preachy or didactic.
Legendborn is an excellent young adult fantasy novel that is well-suited to the audiobook format. The narration by Joniece Abbott-Pratt is excellent, and the pacing and world-building are top-notch. The novel deals with important themes in a thoughtful and nuanced way, and the characters are engaging and well-developed. I would highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys young adult fantasy or is looking for a fast-paced and engaging adventure.
