The story begins with Kaye and her mother, Ellen, moving back to Kaye’s hometown of New Jersey after years of traveling around the country. Kaye is a rebellious teenager who doesn’t fit in with the other kids at school. She spends most of her time hanging out with her best friend, Janet, and playing in her band. However, Kaye’s life takes a drastic turn when she witnesses a faerie knight named Roiben kill another faerie in a club.
Kaye is drawn into the world of the faeries and discovers that she is a changeling, a human child who was swapped with a faerie child at birth. She meets a group of faeries who are trying to overthrow the current queen, Silarial, and they believe that Kaye can help them. Kaye is hesitant to get involved, but she soon realizes that she has no choice.
The audiobook is narrated by Kate Rudd, who does an excellent job of bringing the story to life. She captures the essence of each character and makes the story engaging and exciting. Her voice is clear and easy to understand, and she does a great job of conveying the emotions of the characters.
One of the things that I enjoyed about the audiobook was the world-building. Holly Black has created a rich and complex world of faeries that is both fascinating and terrifying. The faeries in this world are not the cute and friendly creatures that we often see in fairy tales. They are dangerous and unpredictable, and they have their own set of rules and customs that humans must follow if they want to survive.
The characters in the story are also well-developed and interesting. Kaye is a strong and independent character who is not afraid to stand up for herself. She is also vulnerable and has a lot of emotional baggage that she has to deal with. Roiben is a complex character who is torn between his loyalty to the queen and his feelings for Kaye. He is a faerie knight who has been betrayed by the queen and is seeking revenge.
The plot of the story is fast-paced and exciting. There are a lot of twists and turns that keep the reader engaged and guessing. The story is also dark and gritty, which adds to the overall atmosphere of the book. There are some violent and disturbing scenes in the book, so it may not be suitable for younger readers.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Tithe audiobook to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy or faerie tales. The story is well-written, the characters are interesting, and the world-building is excellent. Kate Rudd’s narration is also top-notch and adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.
