The story picks up where the second book, Rebel Spring, left off. The kingdoms are still at war, and the stakes are higher than ever. The book follows the perspectives of several characters, including Cleo, Jonas, Lucia, and Magnus, as they navigate the dangerous political landscape of Mytica.

As the war between the kingdoms intensifies, alliances are formed and broken, and secrets are revealed. The characters must navigate treacherous waters and make difficult choices if they hope to survive.
One of the strengths of the Falling Kingdoms series is its complex and well-developed characters. Each character has their own motivations and struggles, and their perspectives are all equally compelling. Cleo, in particular, is a standout character. She is strong-willed and determined, but also vulnerable and flawed. Her grief over the loss of her family is palpable, and her desire for revenge is understandable. However, she also learns to trust and rely on others, which makes her growth as a character all the more satisfying.
The audiobook narration by Fred Berman is excellent. He does a great job of bringing the characters to life and conveying their emotions. His pacing is also spot-on, and he keeps the story moving at a steady pace.
The world-building in Gathering Darkness is also impressive. Mytica is a richly imagined world, with its own history, mythology, and politics. The different kingdoms are distinct and well-defined, with their own cultures and customs. The magic system is also well thought out and adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story.
One of the criticisms of the Falling Kingdoms series is that it can be predictable at times. The plot twists and turns are not always surprising, and some of the character arcs are fairly predictable. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing. The series is still highly entertaining and engaging, even if it is not always surprising.
Overall, Gathering Darkness is a strong entry in the Falling Kingdoms series. It continues the story in a satisfying way and sets up the next book, Frozen Tides, nicely. The characters are well-developed, the world-building is impressive, and the audiobook narration is excellent.
