The story of Bone Crossed picks up where the previous book, Iron Kissed, left off. Mercy Thompson, a coyote shapeshifter and mechanic, is still recovering from the traumatic events of the previous book. She was brutally attacked and raped by a fae, and her friend and mentor, Zee, was arrested for killing the fae in retaliation. Mercy is struggling to come to terms with what happened to her and is haunted by nightmares.
As the story begins, Mercy receives a visit from her vampire friend, Stefan. He tells her that his mistress, Marsilia, the leader of the local vampire seethe, has discovered that Mercy killed one of her vampires in the previous book. Marsilia is angry and wants revenge. Stefan warns Mercy that Marsilia has put a bounty on her head and that she needs to be careful.
Mercy is also dealing with the fallout from her relationship with Adam, the alpha of the local werewolf pack. In the previous book, they became romantically involved, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Mercy is not a werewolf. Some members of the pack are unhappy with their alpha being involved with a coyote, and Mercy is struggling to find her place in the pack.
As Mercy tries to navigate these challenges, she is also dealing with a new threat. A powerful sorcerer named Amber is targeting Mercy and her loved ones. Amber has a personal vendetta against Mercy and is determined to destroy her. Mercy must use all of her skills and resources to protect herself and those she cares about.
