The story of Dark Challenge revolves around Julian Savage, a Carpathian warrior who has been living in isolation for centuries. Julian is a powerful and dangerous man, feared by many of his own kind. He has been living alone for so long that he has forgotten what it feels like to be part of a community. However, his life changes when he meets Desari, a beautiful and talented singer who is also a Carpathian.
Desari is part of a group of Carpathians who have formed a band and are touring the world, using their music to lure in potential mates. When Julian hears Desari’s voice, he is immediately drawn to her. However, he is also wary of her, as he knows that she and her bandmates are not like other Carpathians. They have chosen to live among humans and have even formed relationships with them, something that is strictly forbidden in Carpathian society.
Despite his reservations, Julian cannot resist Desari’s pull. He joins her band and begins to travel with them, hoping to get to know her better. As they spend more time together, Julian and Desari begin to fall in love. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Julian is a Carpathian male and Desari is a Carpathian female. In Carpathian society, males are dominant and females are subservient. Julian struggles to reconcile his feelings for Desari with his ingrained beliefs about gender roles.
As Julian and Desari’s relationship deepens, they are faced with a new threat. A group of rogue vampires is targeting Carpathians, hoping to destroy them. Julian and Desari must work together to protect their people and defeat the vampires. Along the way, they discover that they are stronger together than they ever could be alone.
One of the strengths of Dark Challenge is its world-building. Feehan has created a rich and complex mythology for her Carpathian people, complete with its own history, culture, and language. The audiobook version of the novel does an excellent job of bringing this world to life. Crisden’s narration is clear and engaging, and he does a great job of differentiating between the various characters.
Another strength of Dark Challenge is its characters. Julian and Desari are both complex and well-developed, with their own strengths and weaknesses. Julian is a classic alpha male, but he is also vulnerable and haunted by his past. Desari is a strong and independent woman, but she is also struggling to find her place in a society that does not value her as much as it does her male counterparts. Their relationship is compelling and believable, and it is easy to root for them as they face the challenges that come their way.
One of the weaknesses of Dark Challenge is its pacing. The novel is slow to start, with much of the first half devoted to setting up the world and introducing the characters. While this is necessary, it can be a bit tedious at times. However, once the action picks up, the novel becomes much more engaging.
Another weakness of Dark Challenge is its treatment of gender roles. While the novel does address the issue of male dominance in Carpathian society, it does not fully explore the implications of this. The novel seems to suggest that Julian and Desari’s relationship is an exception to the rule, rather than a challenge to it. This may be disappointing for readers who are looking for a more nuanced exploration of gender roles.
Overall, Dark Challenge is a solid entry in the Dark series. It has engaging characters, a richly imagined world, and plenty of action and romance. The audiobook version is well-narrated and is a great way to experience the novel. While it may not be perfect, it is definitely worth a listen for fans of paranormal romance and urban fantasy.
