Kingdoms and Chaos is an epic fantasy audiobook written by Kel Kade and narrated by Nick Podehl. It is the fourth book in the King’s Dark Tidings series and was published in 2018. The audiobook has a runtime of 16 hours and 23 minutes and is available on Audible.

The story of Kingdoms and Chaos picks up where the previous book, Rezkin’s Gambit, left off. Rezkin, the protagonist, has successfully completed his mission to retrieve the sword of legend, Frisha has been rescued, and the kingdom of Ashai has been saved from the brink of destruction. However, Rezkin’s troubles are far from over. He must now face the consequences of his actions and deal with the chaos that has been unleashed upon the kingdoms.

The audiobook is divided into three parts, each focusing on a different aspect of the story. The first part deals with the aftermath of Rezkin’s mission. The people of Ashai are grateful for his heroism, but the nobles are wary of his power and influence. They fear that he may become a threat to their own ambitions and conspire to undermine him. Rezkin, who has always been a loner, must now navigate the treacherous waters of politics and diplomacy if he wants to secure his position and protect his friends.

The second part of the audiobook focuses on the external threats that the kingdoms face. The neighboring kingdom of Darnesia has been invaded by a powerful army led by a mysterious figure known as the Black Knight. The Darnesian king seeks Ashai’s help in repelling the invaders, but the Ashai nobles are reluctant to get involved in a war that does not directly benefit them. Rezkin, however, sees an opportunity to test his skills and prove his loyalty to the kingdom. He volunteers to lead a small group of elite warriors to Darnesia and help the king defend his realm.

The third and final part of the audiobook deals with the ultimate threat to the kingdoms. A powerful sorcerer known as the Dark One has been awakened from his slumber and seeks to conquer the world. He has amassed an army of dark creatures and is determined to destroy anyone who stands in his way. Rezkin and his companions must now face their greatest challenge yet and stop the Dark One before it’s too late.

One of the strengths of Kingdoms and Chaos is its well-developed characters. Rezkin, the main character, is a complex and intriguing figure. He is a skilled warrior, a master strategist, and a man of honor. However, he is also emotionally detached and struggles to connect with others. Throughout the audiobook, we see him grow and evolve as he learns to trust his friends and open up to them. The supporting characters are also well-written and add depth to the story. Frisha, Rezkin’s love interest, is a strong and independent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. Tam, Rezkin’s loyal friend and companion, provides comic relief and a sense of humanity to the story.

Another strength of the audiobook is its world-building. The kingdoms of Ashai and Darnesia are richly detailed and feel like real places with their own histories, cultures, and politics. The magic system is also well thought out and adds an extra layer of depth to the story. The Dark One and his minions are suitably terrifying and provide a sense of urgency to the plot.

The narration by Nick Podehl is excellent. He brings the characters to life with distinct voices and accents. His pacing is spot-on, and he knows when to ramp up the tension and when to dial it back. His performance adds an extra layer of immersion to the story and makes it easy to get lost in the world of the audiobook.

One of the few weaknesses of Kingdoms and Chaos is its pacing. The audiobook is over 16 hours long, and at times, it feels like the story is dragging. There are several scenes that could have been trimmed down or cut entirely without affecting the overall plot. However, this is a minor quibble, and the audiobook is still an enjoyable listen.

In conclusion, Kingdoms and Chaos is a worthy addition to the King’s Dark Tidings series. It has well-developed characters, a richly detailed world, and a gripping plot. The narration by Nick Podehl is excellent, and the audiobook is a must-listen for fans of epic fantasy.
