The story begins with Georgie receiving an invitation to attend a royal wedding in Transylvania. She is excited to attend the wedding, but her excitement is short-lived when she discovers that the bride is her cousin, Queen Marina of Romania. Georgie is not thrilled about attending the wedding, as she knows that her cousin is not a very nice person. However, she decides to go anyway, as she hopes to use the opportunity to find a wealthy husband.
When Georgie arrives in Transylvania, she is greeted by a strange and eerie atmosphere. The castle where the wedding is taking place is old and creepy, and the locals are superstitious and fearful. Georgie soon discovers that there is more to the wedding than meets the eye. The bride is not happy about the wedding, and there are rumors that she is being forced into it by her husband-to-be, a wealthy American businessman.
As Georgie investigates the situation, she discovers that there are many people who have a motive for wanting the wedding to go ahead. There are also many secrets being kept by the members of the royal family, and Georgie must use all of her wit and charm to uncover the truth.
One of the things that I love about this audiobook is the way that Rhys Bowen has created such a vivid and atmospheric setting. The descriptions of the castle and the surrounding countryside are so detailed that I felt like I was there with Georgie, experiencing everything that she was experiencing. The narration by Katherine Kellgren also adds to the atmosphere, as she does an excellent job of creating different voices for each character.
Another thing that I love about this audiobook is the way that Rhys Bowen has developed the character of Georgie. In previous books in the series, Georgie has been portrayed as a bit of a bumbling amateur detective. However, in this book, she is much more confident and capable. She is still charming and witty, but she is also more determined and focused. I enjoyed seeing this growth in her character, and I think that it bodes well for future books in the series.
The plot of the book is also very well done. There are plenty of twists and turns, and the mystery is complex enough to keep the listener engaged throughout. I also appreciated the way that Rhys Bowen incorporated real historical events into the story. The book is set in 1938, and there are references to the political situation in Europe at the time. This adds an extra layer of depth to the story and makes it feel more authentic.
Overall, I would highly recommend Queen of Hearts to anyone who enjoys historical mysteries. The audiobook is well narrated, and the story is engaging and atmospheric. The characters are well developed, and the plot is complex enough to keep the listener guessing until the end. I look forward to listening to more books in the Royal Spyness series.
